Lycos compares each page to a user's query and gives higher scores to pages that contain the most keywords. It also looks for pages that mention these words early on, rather than far down. Lycos will only spider sites that rate high in link popularity.Don't bother registering every page in your site. The Lycos Spider will automatically index all pages after your home page. After you list with Lycos it takes about 2-4 weeks to appear. The Lycos robot is symbol-intolerant; don't register an URL with any of these four symbols = & ?. The Lycos robot will revisit your site on a periodic basis. If they can't connect to your site after an extended period of time (about four weeks), the address will be deleted from their "rolling catalog." Lycos can now detect a user's country of origin for redirection to regional versions. CompuServe sends over 3 million people to Lycos through their Search button.
Lycos does look at your Meta tags, but places more weight in the full text of your document. Go ahead and use Meta keywords but make sure you repeat those words again at the start of your page. Are you using a lot of punctuations in your document? This may be part of the reason you're not showing up where you think you should. Lycos is punctuation intolerant. Don't use punctuation in the URL of your page. This is a guaranteed way not to be indexed by Lycos.
2-3 weeks to get listed
Will read your ALT image tags. Lycos will probably use this tag to summarize your site in it's results if you use it very early in the page.
My site seems to have ended up in Lycos purgatory. It used to be in the top ten but now it's nowhere. I may have submitted a few too many entry pages (I'm not exactly sure what I did). I probably got greedy and ended up on the s**t list. Is there any way to remove pages from Lycos so that I only have a few entry pages? I've resubmitted several of what I think are the offending pages and gotten the "unable to spider this page message" but I'm not sure if this removes them or what. Have I screwed up, or should I just keep submitting stuff until I come back up in the list again?
The most basic thing to do is remove the offending pages from the server entirely and then resubmit them so that the robot will hopefully remove the non-existent pages from the index.
