The Truth About Search Engines

Meta Description

Maximum - 200 characters.

A search with one of the search engines is likely result in you seeing a description of each website in the search results. The provides information what your site contains. In some cases, Search Engines use the first few lines of your HTML document for the description. If those lines are appropriately descriptive, great! However, if the first few lines are not particularly descriptive or if you want to present a different description of your site, you can tell some Search Engines exactly what you want the description to say.

To specify what you want the description to say, use the META tag between the HEAD tags. For example:

The document head before adding the meta tag.

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Developments at ACME Corporation Opening Devices</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<H1>ACME Corporation Opening Devices Information</H1>

You can add a META tag to the document head with a brief description, like this:

<META name="description" content="ACME Tools for opening the world.">
actual example

The top of your document would then look like this:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Developments at ACME Corporation Opening Devices</TITLE>
<META name="description" content="ACME Tools for opening the world.">
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<H1>ACME Corporation Innovative Devices Information</H1>

After robots visit your site, your new description will be displayed with the URL when people search for information.

Exercise:

Go to Crown Jewels Home Page and view the HTML Source Code
(Usually VIEW | SOURCE on your browser's top menu bar).
Find the Meta Description Tag at the top of the source code.
(Notice it is between <HEAD> and </HEAD>)

FAQ's

In terms of what the engine sees, how important are keywords in the description compared to everything else?

The description is what the potential visitor sees, and should concisely and accurately describe what they will find when they visit THAT page. Not every search engine uses the meta description but for the ones that do, this is important.
