The Truth About Search Engines

Dates

One item that your potential readers will see within search results is the date that the page was last modified. This date reflects the last time that particular page was modified, not necessarily the date other information in the site was last modified. This date might be misleading for your potential readers because you might have, in fact, updated some pages in your site but not the particular page that AltaVista Search retrieved. No matter how good your content may be, if people see a date like May 15, 1994, prominently displayed at AltaVista Search, they'll often presume the site is inactive and the information is obsolete.

The date is also important to Scooter, which only looks for new material. If for any reason, the version number or date of a page has not changed, Scooter will not revisit it, and new material there will not be found. That means that the page will continue to be listed, but with the old content.

Therefore, when updating pages in your site, you need to be sure that you also update all pages related to the one you're updating so that they all reflect a new revision date.
