The Truth About Search Engines

ALT Tags

You will be okay by putting keywords in your alt tags if you don't just repeat keywords. Put them into a sensible phrase and you should be fine. Don't do "ball bats, ball bats, ball bats 25 times. Instead put ball bat catalogs and ball bat information. This you could put several times but I would recommend changing the phrase to fit the graphic. Keep in mind the whole idea of alt tags is to give info to the person viewing your page without graphics displayed. If you try to see your alt tags as a viewer and they make sense to you, then you should be all right.

The search engine that takes most notice of ALT tag text and, incidentally, <!--comment tags --> is Excite. You should never compromise the design and layout of your page in the quest for promotion, it's just not done. If somebody has their graphics switched off, they want to see a pleasant, short description of the image, not a list of keywords. The next question you'll ask is "How about having a tiny one-pixel graphic that nobody can see, and load the ALT tag with keywords?" My answer is: if you must, but personally I wouldn't bother. Even if Excite does index the keywords, it's a very weak element compared to <TITLE>, <BODY> etc
